I’ve tried plenty of smart curtain devices over the years, and most left something to be desired. They either struggled with heavier fabrics, made too much noise in the morning, or took forever to set up. SwitchBot recently launched the Curtain 3 for rod-style curtains, and after using it daily for a few weeks, it’s easily my favorite in this category.
It’s significantly stronger than the previous version, runs almost silently, and handles substantial curtain weights without any issues. If you’re looking for an easy way to automate your curtains, this one is worth a close look.
What’s New with SwitchBot Curtain 3 (Rod)?
- Double the pushing force – now supports curtains up to 15 kg (33 lbs) per panel
- Upgraded motor for smoother, quieter performance
- New positioning magnets – eliminates light gaps and removes the need for frequent recalibration
- Matter support with SwitchBot Hub 2 (native Apple HomeKit integration)
- Same simple clip-on installation that made earlier models popular
SwitchBot clearly took user feedback seriously and addressed the most common pain points.
What’s in the Box?
- 1 × SwitchBot Curtain 3 motor unit (Rod version)
- 2 × Positioning magnets
- 1 × USB-C charging cable
- Clips and adapters for various rod sizes
- Quick start guide
Battery life remains impressive – typically 8-12 months on a single charge with daily use.
How to Install It (Takes About 5 Minutes)
- Charge the unit for a couple of hours.
- Clip it onto your curtain rod (fits 15-40 mm diameters).
- Attach the positioning magnets to the bottom of each curtain panel.
- Add the device in the SwitchBot app via Bluetooth, then pull the curtains fully open and closed once so it learns the length. That’s it.
No tools or permanent changes required.
Everyday Use – My Experience
I’m using it on fairly heavy blackout curtains in the bedroom. The previous generation sometimes hesitated; the Curtain 3 moves them smoothly every time. In Silent Mode it’s barely audible – quiet enough that it doesn’t disturb light sleepers.
The app is straightforward:
- Slider for precise opening percentage
- Multiple schedules (different times for weekdays vs weekends)
- Scenes that combine curtains with lights or other devices
- Battery status and firmware updates
Pair it with a SwitchBot Hub 2 (or Mini Hub) and you get voice control with Alexa, Google Home, Siri/HomeKit, SmartThings, and IFTTT. Matter support means it appears natively in the Apple Home app.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will it work on U-shaped or bay window rods?
A: Yes, as long as the section the robot travels is straight. Corners usually need two units.
Q: Does it work with grommet, tab-top, or ring-top curtains?
A: Yes – the clips attach securely to rings or fabric.
Q: Do I need a hub?
A: Only for voice control, remote access away from home, or Apple HomeKit/Matter. Bluetooth, app, and schedules work fine without one.
Q: Can it open both curtain panels at once?
A: You’ll need two units (one for each side). They sync perfectly in the app.
Q: What about double rods (sheer + blackout layers)?
A: One Curtain 3 per rod – they can operate together or independently.
